Let’s Go On A Death Picnic

When people think of the word “cemetery,” they often associate it with fear, grief, or loss—images shaped by films and media that portray cemeteries as dark and unsettling places. However, after visiting Green-Wood Cemetery, my perception of cemeteries completely changed. Death is often treated as something distant or unfamiliar, yet it is one of the few universal experiences that connects all of us. Whether directly or through the loss of loved ones, it remains an inevitable part of life.

Through this book, I wanted to capture the quiet beauty of cemeteries and challenge the negative connotations we have grown accustomed to. Rather than viewing them solely as places of mourning, I hope to present cemeteries as spaces where life and death coexist—places woven into the rhythm of everyday life, reminding us of both memory and humanity.

I also created a video that captures the atmosphere and quiet beauty of Green-Wood Cemetery, accompanied by the poem “On the Death of the Beloved” by John O'Donohue, which is also featured in the book.
